   Since the inauguration of the new European Commission in 2024, EU defence policies have gained unprecedented momentum. A vast array of new regulations and funding instruments is rapidly emerging . These are essential developments for every military and civilian defence expert across Europe. To mention a few: the European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS), the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) (€1.5bn), the European Readiness 2030 white paper, the SAFE instrument (€150bn), the waiver on the EMU Stability and Growth Pact (€650bn), and the legal Omnibus .. As these frameworks take shape, the European Commission is crafting even more far-reaching proposals, including a European Defence Union, a Single Market for Defence, a European DARPA, and potential large-scale funding via Eurobonds or the 2028–2035 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).   On 5 September 2026, our former chairman, Drs. Ernst van Hoek , passed away at the age of 84  following a long and courageous battle with illness In the1980's, Ernst served as Director of Scientific Research at the Netherlands Ministry of Defence and, from 1992 to 1997, as Director of the NATO Agency for Research & Technology (RTO/STO). In these roles, he made a significant contribution to scientific research, technological development within the defence sector, and the Netherlands role in these fields. Following his retirement, he remained active as a board member of the Defence Technology Department of the Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers (KIVI). For many years, he chaired the Prof. Ir. Dr. J.M.J. Kooy Fund and served as member of the Kooy Symposium Committee , with which Eurodefense is affiliated since this year. Op 5 september 2026 overleed onze oud-voorzitter drs. Ernst van Hoek op 84-jarige leeftijd, na een lange en moedige strijd met zijn gezondheid die hij niet kon winnen. Ernst was in de 80-er jaren van de vorige eeuw directeur Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek bij het Ministerie van Defensie en van 1992 tot 1997 directeur van het NATO Agency for Research & Technology (STO). Daarmee heeft hij een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan het wetenschappelijk onderzoek, de technologische ontwikkeling binnen Defensie én de Nederlandse rol daarin. Na zijn pensionering bleef hij actief als bestuurslid van de afdeling Defensietechnologie van het Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs (KIVI). Hij was vele jaren voorzitter van het Prof. ir. dr. J.M.J. Kooy-fonds en lid van de Kooy-symposiumcommissie , waar Eurodefense sinds vorig jaar bij is aangesloten. In 2010 werd Ernst door het KIVI benoemd tot Lid van Verdienste .
