The security and defence capabilities of the EU should be strengthened. There is a growing Europe wide support for a more effective defence and better cooperation. However, multilateral defence cooperation in past decades was difficult. To give new impetus to strengthening the security and defence of the EU, the EURODEFENSE Network, represented in 15 countries, has sent a practical proposal to the president of the European Commission, the president of the European Council and the president of the European Parliament. European security is no longer just about military threats and the defence of territory of a member state. There are many new threats and developments that most individual Member States are unable to cope with. These involve various, often hybrid, threats such as cyberattacks, des-information, human trafficking, illegal immigration, terrorism, trade restrictions and conflicts in border regions. Het veiligheids- en verdedigingsvermogen van de EU moet worden versterkt. Daarover is veel te doen in Nederland en Europa. Multilaterale defensiesamenwerking verliep de afgelopen decennia moeizaam. Om een nieuwe impuls te geven aan versterking van de veiligheid en defensie van de Europese Unie heeft het in 15 landen vertegenwoordigde EuroDéfense-netwerk een voorstel naar Brussel gestuurd.  Het gaat bij Europese veiligheid niet langer uitsluitend om militaire dreigingen en om verdediging van territorium van een lidstaat. Er zijn veel nieuwe dreigingen en ontwikkelingen die de meeste individuele lidstaten niet aan kunnen. Het gaat om verschillende, vaak hybride bedreigingen, zoals misinformatie, illegale migratiestromen, cyberaanvallen, terrorisme en conflicten in grensregio’s. European cooperative military education, training and simulation

  Virtual reality simulation.  Picture    Gert Altmann  via  Pixabay European defence cooperation on education, training and simulation has many important advantages to enhance skills, share European military culture for our military men and women, and reduce costs. The importance of cooperative training and the intention to make training an element of the permanent structured cooperation has been agreed in the Lisbon Treaty. This intention was reinforced in more recent papers on European cooperation like the EU global strategy for defence and security, but omitted in the European Defence Fund. Simulation technology for training was never mentioned. Hence, we believe cooperation on military education, training and simulation needs more attention.
