Financial Times - Afghanistan pullout deepens EU concern over lack of military power

The EU has “learnt the hard way” from the Afghanistan crisis about the need to build up its own defence capabilities and develop the “attributes of hard power”, Brussels’ commissioner in charge of defence industry issues has said. Thierry Breton told the Financial Times that common defence was “no longer optional” and that the EU must become capable of operating military missions in “full autonomy” at its border and elsewhere.
