Following the first European Defence Policy Update Webinar held on 29 May, Eurodefense Netherlands, the Defence and Security department of the Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers (KIVI DV) and The federation of European Defence Technology Associations (EDTA) are pleased to invite you to a second edition on Monday, 9 November 2026.

With European defence policy evolving rapidly, this follow-up edition will review key developments since our previous session, assess progress on current initiatives, and explore our European institutions’ plans for future policies. Perspectives from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Defence Agency will provide insight into the direction of EU defence policy and its implications for Member States and Europe’s defence technology and industrial sectors.

Ons continent bevindt zich in zwaar geopolitiek weer. Terwijl de Russische dreiging toeneemt, nemen de VS steeds meer afstand van Europa. Dat betekent dat Europa de verantwoordelijkheid moet nemen voor de eigen veiligheid. Hoewel de huidige regering goede maatregelen neemt, gaan deze voor het Europese beleid op fundamentele punten niet ver genoeg. Dit standpunt is niet ingegeven door een politiek ideologische visie, maar op basis van feitelijke ontwikkelingen die relevant zijn voor ons land en Europa. In dit artikel geven wij vier voorstellen die wezenlijk kunnen bijdragen aan Europese strategische autonomie. De regering lijkt in o.a. de defensienota onvoldoende te erkennen dat de VS steeds minder geïnteresseerd is in de Europese veiligheid. In memoriam oud-voorzitter Ernst van Hoek

Op 5 september 2026 overleed onze oud-voorzitter drs. Ernst van Hoek op 84-jarige leeftijd, na een lange en moedige strijd met zijn gezondheid die hij niet kon winnen. Ernst was in de 80-er jaren van de vorige eeuw directeur Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek bij het Ministerie van Defensie en van 1992 tot 1997 directeur van het NATO Agency for Research & Technology (STO). Daarmee heeft hij een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan het wetenschappelijk onderzoek, de technologische ontwikkeling binnen Defensie én de Nederlandse rol daarin. Na zijn pensionering bleef hij actief als bestuurslid van de afdeling Defensietechnologie van het Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs (KIVI). Hij was vele jaren voorzitter van het Prof. ir. dr. J.M.J. Kooy-fonds en lid van de Kooy-symposiumcommissie , waar Eurodefense sinds vorig jaar bij is aangesloten. In 2010 werd Ernst door het KIVI benoemd tot Lid van Verdienste . How to achieve European Strategic Autonomy?

  Our continent is facing severe geopolitical headwinds. While the Russian threat is increasing, the United States is gradually distancing itself from Europe. This means that Europe must take responsibility for its own security. Although our current( Netherlands) government is taking useful measures, these do not go far enough on several fundamental aspects of European policy. This view is not driven by political ideology, but by factual developments that are relevant to both our country and Europe. In this article we propose four lines of action that could contribute to strategic autonomous Europe. Our government appears to underestimate the extent to which the United States is becoming less interested in European security. This shift in priorities has been underway for years, but it is now having far-reaching consequences.
